What do we do?
Nexus facilitiates a means by which young people can voice their opinion to government. Various organs of government at every level approach the public to make submissions, or give their opinions on various aspects of what the government is doing, or is planning to do. As citizens we have a responsibility to respond to government's request for an opinion, and by giving our opinions and voicing our views, we're playing a crucial role in ensuring our wishes are taken into account in lawmaking and government initiatives.
Nexus has put together a panel of young people (loosely defined, students, basically!), which you're most welcome to join, who keep an eye out for new policies released by the government. When policies come out, the panel is alerted and different members with different areas of interest or expertise study the policy for positives and negatives, putting together brief summaries of how the policy affects their area of interest, and what their opinion of the policy/proposal is.
This is then put together into a submission, which Nexus puts forward to government.
This entire process has been put together to make it easier for young people to put submissions forward. If you join the panel, Nexus will alert you to new policies/proposals that government has put out, and will invite your opinion on any or all of the aspects of the policy. You can then put forward any opinions you may have, which Nexus will then compile into a formal submission for you.
If you're interested, and would like to join the panel, or would like to just get involved in any way you can, get in touch with us: contact@nexusnz.org

Nexus has been in dialogue with variou groups from public, private and NGO sectors, in order to find some way for students to get hands on experience, working on projects with a focus on environmental sustainability.
Nexus is seeking collaboration on this support network, by placing students in projects where they can offer their knowledge and expertise while gaining important experience and knowledge about the wider impacts of their actions, and learning how they can apply their learning to the real world in real projects, in community service.

The Nexus Research Collaboration Initiative (RCI) is an idea that would be of interest to many final year engineering students. Final year engineering students have to carry out a year long project on a topic of their choice. Nominally. Usually the student liaises with academic supervisors to identify those lecturers who are working on areas of interest to the student. Occasionally such projects work out as a collaboration between the student, the university, and a business in industry who sponsors, or commissions the research, in order to develop knowledge in a field they are interested in.
Nexus is working to try and develop a formal system whereby students interested in working on projects for Sustainable Development, and members of industry looking for researchers on various aspects of business can come together and work together on such projects.
We believe this would benefit Industry by developing knowledge on how to deal with the resource sustainability problems we are facing, while giving students invaluable experience in working with industry on a real project with actual application.
If you are a student contemplating your final year project, and you have a rough idea of where you want to take your research, or would like to talk to us about what's on offer, get in touch, and we'll see what we can do to help you!
